The Trouble with Juju Hats...

I love Juju Hats. No doubt.

That is why I put it in my beloved's nursery in the first place.

However, after a few months, things started happening.... pink dust kept accumulating on the crib. And I saw, it came from the hat...

.. it was corroding :-(

I searched the internet on feathers and juju hats and maintenance, and I couldn't find any.
So I finally moved the hat downstairs...

... where sadly, it still continues to corrode... :-(

It's not obvious yet when you look from afar and in the photos, but the middle part is 'balding', and I don't know how long it will last!

But I still love it anyhow, just a bit of warning to people who are considering getting them. If you know of ways of minimizing or stopping this from happening, please let me know and share away!

And  if you ask me if I regret getting the Juju hat?
Nah - I don't regret getting this fabulous head piece, but I will never put it close to a bed from now on, maybe a place like this where I could easily clean it!

Kids are on Spring break so far I think I am too!

Have a Great Week !

Would love to hear your thoughts! Please share away...

  1. Oh no...that is so disappointing. Love the bright pop of color in your living room though - so fun! Enjoy your break and happy Tuesday!

  2. Oh my goodness it's beautiful! Short of preserving it in some sort of acrylic or glass museum storage box, I'm all out of ideas. :(

  3. Hmmmmm? I never heard this before. I like the juju hats too.

  4. Well, I was waiting to find out the answer to this question. I am sorry it's giving you a problem. It sure is pretty though.

  5. I love that pink Juju hat, what a statement it makes at your gorgeous living room. Sophie's room is simple a delight and she's growing so fast, I remember when she was just born!

  6. Oh... yes, I'm sure it sheds, so where you have it now is perfect!

  7. Juju hat looks fabolous! This colour is amazing and new place is great -in spite of all:-)

  8. Oh that stinks! Maybe from the dye used?

  9. Oh no! For some reason I keep thinking some sort of spray might help... like hairspray! I have no evidence this would work, but just thinking some clear spray that would help it stay together might be worth a shot.

  10. Such a pretty juju hat, so sad that it's corroding. Hope you are enjoying spring break.

  11. It looks lovely and fun, but you were right to remove it from above your daughter's crib.

  12. Oh what a shame but it sure is pretty....Christine

  13. It's a such a shame that your beautiful juju hat is shedding. Now, I will have to think twice about getting one in the future. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  14. I am having the same problem and there seems to be no other mention of this happening that I can find on Google! Mine is white and above our tv but it is definitely shedding down with some dust stuff that accumulates and looks like my tv and tv stand has dandruff. So sad this is happening since they are not cheap but I too don't know how to fix it! I took it outside and gave it a nice shaking to release some of the excess whatever it keeps dropping but it still is slowly turning into dust. Disappointing, but I too don't regret buying one

    1. A supplier contacted me and told me to wrap it in plastic and put it in the freezer for a couple of days. I did, since luckily I had a big enough freezer to fit it in. It stopped it for a while, but then it started shedding again. So now its back in the bag... :-(

  15. Hi - I actually sell juju hats and bring them right from Cameroon. Here are your best options... 1) Freezer works best. Put them in the freezer for minimum of 24 hours which kills any of the 'mites' that can cause damage. Then repeat once a year 2) You can purchase moth spray, which works well. 3) Hang a fresh sprig of lavender behind it and allow it to dry. 4) Put a sachet of cedar behind it. Hope this helps! I agree - the hats are beautiful!!

Thank you for reading my blog! Hope you can stop by again sometime! Have a Wonderful Day!!
