Basement Guest Room PROGRESS AT LAST!

Last year, I wrote a post on my PLANS for the Basement Guest Room HERE.

Sadly, this plan was shoved for the a lot of other projects in and out of our home!

And because our current Upstairs Guest Room will be turned into our Nursery soon, and with my mom coming to help us out, we needed to fix our Basement Guest room FAST!

A futon is not the most relaxing bed for 3 month

So this Labor day weekend, hubs, son and I started on improving this space!

BEHOLD...

I think this will be comfy enough for my mom for a while,  don't you think?
We had to cover this hole going to the crawl space

My Dad made a wooden cover for this that would slide in and out but even with that ingenious cover, it was still an EYE SORE. So I thought of adding the curtains....

I added a Sisal Rug and got the Upholstered Headboard from WALMART months ago & it had been sitting in the box in storage for a while, bought the Mattress the same day we set up the room (taking advantage of Labor day sales ;-)) ,Then got the quilt set & Bed skirt from TARGET, all other things in the room including the makeshift side table are all ours.

We were pretty happy with the result but we're not done yet...

1) We need to add a small closet here on this narrow space beside our old TARGET armoire where a TV is in right now.

2) Fix up the is side of the room. The table is way too big and I have to do some arranging still.

3) Cover up this huge storm door. I am thinking of curtains again or do something with the door, not quite sure yet. Any suggestions?

Reflections from the mirrors inside the room

I think my mother will be quite pleased with her room for the next couple of months. :-)
Have a Great Week!

  3. Vel, your mother's room looks like a totally new room. Mercy, I'm thinking your mother will be thrilled to be with y'all anyway. Speaking as a grandmother, I know she will enjoy the room and her time with each of you. Beautiful selections for the problem areas. Love the curtain idea! Thanks!

  4. Beautiful! Your mother is going to feel like a queen. The quilts and blankets look so luxurious. I don't know where that door leads...maybe a curtain with a full length mirror over (we need to check ourselves out!). You did a wonderful job! Now relax!

  6. Vel, this rooms look so beautiful and inviting. You did a great job! I am sure your mom would feel comfortable staying there, I know I would! As for the storm door, I would use the same curtain panels (like the one you bought from Home Goods) for cohesiveness. Another suggestion is using a folding screen (that is tall enough) to hide the door. Hope that helps!

  13. Oh, I think the room looks really cozy, Vel. I really like the drape behind the bed -- it looks very intentional and not a cover-up solution. I think I would probably paint the storm door the same color as the walls and then it would kind of disappear. Maybe?

  15. It looks great! I am sure your mom will love it. How awesome that she is coming for a nice long stay! What if you painted that door with chalkboard paint and made it a cool place where you could leave special art of messages for your guests, and they could do the same for you! It looks like the color of chalkboard paint would coordinate with your bedding. Just a thought.

  33. Great job! Very inviting space now.

You may want to place a big furniture piece, such as a tall and wide bookshelf, china cabinet or hutch, in front of the door.

Or you could buy two bi-fold doors and use hinges to attached them together and use it as a screen.

  34. Wow, that headboard is from Walmart!! It looks so good in your room. You created such a nice space for your guests.

  35. Wonderful ideas and colors! As a grandmother myself, I would very much enjoy this room. However, because it is a storm door, you may not want to block access. What if you put an over the door hanging shelf unit. You could display some light weight items which will be special to your mom. Example: Your baby photos, shells, books, small mirrors, the prospects are endless. A small bench for her shoes or purse underneath. Another option: shelving unit on rollers so it could be moved easily in case of emergency.

  37. I find the drapes and headboard have gotten my attention. In fact, was the drapery panel recent?? What fabric is it?? They would be so great in our Master!
