GUEST POST: Fallifying Your Home with Beautiful Fall Decor

So before Thanksgiving hits, I know this post can further enhance your decor for a pretty perfect home for Fall!

It is time to get your décor ready for fall and the winter that is shortly to follow. If you find the thought of the cold, grey months ahead to be daunting, take steps today to make small, but significant changes to your décor to ensure that you breeze through the darkest, most miserable months of the year without too much stress.

Pot Plants

Change your plants around, making sure that fragile plants are kept inside where it's warm. There are several species of plants that cope well with a bit of frost, and these are the ones to use on chilly windowsills and on balconies or verandas. Be shameless when choosing your plants, and make sure that you pick plants that flower willingly and have attractive-looking leaves. The less frost-friendly plants can be moved into the dining room or living room, where their winter foliage will add a lovely splash of nature to the room.

Autumn Wreath

An autumn wreath has become something of a tradition in interior décor circles. You can hang it on your front door or display the wreath in pride of place on the mantelpiece where it will be safe from inclement weather. If you are making your own autumn wreath be sure to include nuts, seeds and berries along with the gloriously colorful autumn leaves. This nod to the harvest will make your wreath seem so much more complete and attractive. Make your wreath a celebration of everything that is best about this time of year to help stave off the blues that can affect us all at the beginning of the cold season.

Bright and Warm

Change your lamps or at least your lamp shades seasonally. While dimmer bulbs and cool coloured shades are excellent for summer and spring, we humans operate better with access to brighter light in winter. Switching to lamp shades in warmer colours changes the atmosphere within the room, discernibly making it seem physically warmer! Cool crisp cotton throws that work well in summer can be exchanged for lovely thick fluffy blankets that are perfect for snuggling under to watch seasonal movies with the family! Different throws and even cushions can make a difference to a fall-ready living room, bringing it together and providing good defenses against chilly grey days.

Colours

Colours make an enormous difference to any room, especially if the room is has a neutral base. For summer, bright pink, lemon yellow and vivid bright green make a cool but cheerful and attractive display, while spring is all about pinks and blues. For autumn, choose the colours of fire: flame red, blaze orange and soft, honey yellow, set against warm chocolate brown and charcoal black. Winter speaks of ice blue, pure white, jet black and tiny sparkles of colour. Get your décor falling into autumn by introducing metallic notes, muted colours like mustard yellow, dusky pink and powder blue, and perhaps even start hinting towards Christmas by bringing out the gold, red and green decorations!

The sooner your home is ready for cold weather and indoor pursuits, the sooner you will feel able to cope with the cold, grey season. Embrace fall and winter this season and you will soon find that there is nothing to fear from the cyclical changing of the seasons!

GUEST POST: What to consider when engaging in a home building company

Today, I have a guest post from IVY DELFIN a Copywriter/Digital Market from TODAYS HOMES in Australia.

She told me about writing a post on what to consider in choosing a home building company when she came across the beginnings of my Kitchen Renovation!

Todays Home

The wrong or the right home building company is one of those decisions that can potentially define you life. We know what a huge impact intelligent architecture can have on our lives; architecture can define the way we live. The politicians in Nazi Germany wanted the buildings that they built to outlast civilisation, as a testament to their power and their capabilities; almost everything we know from ancient times we are told by the magnificent relics left over form their cities and towns. Architect Christopher Alexander recently developed  a theory of ‘human-made order.’ It is based on our natural order, so there is neither contradiction nor confusion between the two types.

His theory can be defined thus:

“(1) Natural and artificial order rely upon the same mechanisms for their working.

(2) Natural order is self-organizing and self-correcting. What we observe is there because it works.

(3) Artificial order is not necessarily self-correcting, or maybe it is on a generational timescale so individuals are not going to notice it. As a result, human beings can do things to the natural environment and build buildings and structures that damage the world. It is not easy to diagnose what is good and distinguish it from what is bad.

(4) It is possible to use science to create diagnostic tools for what is good and bad in human creations — in how they affect the natural environment, including us humans.

(5) We can use the human body as a sensing instrument for what is good and bad in architecture. Basic assumption: human feeling is universal, and people share 90% of their responses, even if individuals come from different cultures or backgrounds.”

With this in mind, you should not take the choice of a home building company lightly. 

Choose it as you would a lifestyle, something that defines you, that you can inhabit but that also inhabits with you. 

So make sure to have lots of conversations with potential home building companies (like Today’s Homes), and then make a decision based on instinct, not price. 

Yes price is important, but this isn’t the place to scrimp and save, in fact, you should scrimp and save in other areas of your life in order that you can afford the right kind of home for yourself. 

You will find that once you have your dream home, other areas of your life will fall into place. 

The pleasure doesn’t stop there: you can then decorate and fancify your home once it’s built. If you have a particular vision for your home interior, you should discuss it initially with your architect, they might be able to help you realize it! 

Your home is the centre of your life, your happy place. Don’t let it become something that you don’t recognize, and don’t let it be shaped by external forces. It’s your home. It’s you.

My Easy Halloween Decorations around the House & Birthday Shout-out!

It's Halloween week and since I'm not sure you all saw my guest post over at LIVING SAVVY , let me share  this with you!

WARNING: I do go crazy decorating during Halloween, but most of this 'craziness' is mainly in our Dining Room, the  rest of the house has only 'subtle' touches here and there. :-)

Here is our Living Room...

Simple pillow switch does the trick

Coffee table

As you can see I  just added a web-inspired black runner underneath my usual coffee table vignette. Switched ups some of my usual brass with this huge ceramic pumpkin and acorn (scored from TJ Maxx years ago), and added my Alexander McQueen Coffee table book and I'm set!

Media Center

The key to decorating for Halloween I think is removing all that is cheery and bright and switching them up with your usual Halloween stuff or at least "Halloween colors". 

Here, I removed most of the family photos, added pumpkins and small ghost candle holders from Walmart and switched up the art to something more dark, and it's set!

Console table

For this area, just placed my black and white Missoni for Target vases, added some glitter skulls & Penguin books, and done!

Scored this guys from last year and the Penguin books are from my collection - just brought out "Dracula" and "Dorian Gray" - perfect for Halloween!

Hallway

These spiders were from Target last year, left-over from my son's Halloween birthday party, thought they looked cool hugging the posts. :-)

Piano

Here I just added the runner, made a lighting switcheroo  by moving my usual floor lamp to the entry and placed my Goodwill Threshold Lamp score. I think the black shade is perfect! I  added some crows  to my grape wood and  my black accessories, and VIOLA! Halloween-ready! Take note of that small rubber snake I added to my boxwood and the rat cut-outs on the stairs.

Witches Dining Room

Remember, you don't have to be ALL OUT to enjoy this fun Holiday, little doses of Halloween goodness can go a long way. Just make sure to keep an open mind, and have LOTS OF CANDY!
