Becoming a U.S. Citizen

An important milestone happened in my life last week.

Getting our Certificate of Citizenship

I became a U.S. Citizen!

I know that most of you are born here in the U.S. and do not know what it takes to become a full-pledged citizen of this great nation.

Our story wasn't tainted with any drama or sad story (luckily), ours was simple and definitely almost the same as anyone else's who came to call this country home - we wanted to have the BEST LIFE we could possibly provide for our family.

Our Welcome Packet

To make a long story short, my husband came here first in 2004 on  a Working Visa, I followed in 2006 on a separate working visa. My husband eventually qualified and changed our visa to an O visa (visa for extraordinary ability), and eventually we applied for Permanent Residence Status (Green Card Status), and then finally 5 years after that, we applied for our Citizenship.

So you can imagine how long our wait was.
But then again, you may be wondering WHY would we want to change our citizenship in the first place? True, we could continue living in the United States for as long as we wanted legally with our Green card, so why?

Welcome Letter from The President
Aside from the fact that as a citizen we can now VOTE, the United States is now MY HOME TOO.
And I want to participate, contribute, gripe and complain as much as anyone out there!
I want to live my life to the fullest and best way possible with all the unalienable rights that go with it! I know that the certificate is just that, a certificate, but it is the validation of  everything we've worked so hard for for this country and it's people.

We had our ceremony in a small town High school in Illinois, attended by some friends and the sophomore class of that same high school.

We weren't expecting much with the ceremony, but it ended up being a very beautiful, meaningful and poignant day for all of us sworn in that day...

Parade of Colors by the Junior ROTC
Lovely songs sung by the Mascoutah HS Choir
"Star Spangled Banner", "America the Beautiful" & "God Bless America"
There were 61 immigrants (10 were physicians) from 28 nations that day.  There was a refugee, now citizen, Guest speaker who gave a wonderful speech about making her "Set-BACK" into a "Set-UP".

The Judge had us all speak one by one, briefly of course,  about who we were, where we came from and how we felt.  And when my turn came, I almost cried (some did too - you can watch it HERE if you want to see).

Of course, though I consider myself an American now, I will always be a FILIPINO-AMERICAN.
My Filipino heritage is ingrained in ME, in who I am.
I am just lucky and BLESSED to be both!

Welcome committee from the Daughters of the American Revolution welcoming
us with gifts and greetings.
First Selfie as an American with our friend Dr. Garrido who became
a citizen that day too

And now that the Oath is done and everything is official, I hope that I, along with my family continue to contribute, give and serve this great country we call home!

GOD BLESS AMERICA

DIY Cherry Blossom Branches

Now that you've seen my SPRING DINING ROOM,

I'm sure you noticed this special focal display I was bragging about too - my DIY Cherry blossom Branches.

I decided to DIY this one, because for the length and amount I wanted, Buying them would end up being too costly! Even on sale, the available Cherry Blossom branches I've looked at are either, too short, or not the right color, but mostly, EXPENSIVE.

So when I made my Spring wreath...

TUTORIAL on CHERRY BLOSSOM SPRING WREATH HERE

I thought why not use the dollar store Cherry blossom for my branches?!
I love the colors and the price was so right! However, they come this way...

Not exactly the Long Flowy branches I was picturing
So I got my GLUE GUN  and gathered some Branches outside...

And I just cut them off from the main branch and glued away.
You can see how it's connected in the close-up picture above.

I thought of adding flower tape, but really, unless your looking very closely, the attachment is hardly noticeable at all.

These were only some, I made a lot more!

I ended up getting 21 pcs. of the Dollar Store blossoms to make 25 tall branches.

Here are the other branches in the Living Room
I really am very happy with the results.
And since I change my mind so quickly, going inexpensive and practical is the best way for me.
Now, I'm even planning on making other branches! We'll see. ;-)

On a personal note, today my little Sophia turns 6 months!!!!!

The smile that makes my day!

Unbelievable I know, time flies so fast! But I'm happy to see how much she's grown and daily, becoming her own little person! Such a happy baby, I cannot complain one bit. Always ready to give her charming smile and always interested in every little thing!

Love you so much my sweet little girl!!!

Hope you all have a Wonderful Weekend!

Loosing a friend....

I was supposed to share something to you today other than this.

But I absolutely can't.

Our hearts are crying once again with the loss of a very close friend in the Philippines.

ALLAN PAUL VICENTE QUINTERO
April 24, 1975 - February 3, 2015
He was a classmate since college, my husband's during med school and a very close friend.
In our country, we call this a "Kabarkada" or buddy.

We've shared so many things together and among the male friends I have, I consider him one of my closest.

We were so shocked when we found out two days ago. He was so young (39) to have a heart attack?!
I cried and cried and truly regret the missed opportunity of seeing him last December when he came to the U.S. He didn't want to imply on us about meeting up since he knew we just had a baby and was busy, I only found out when he emailed me last January 12 and I told him, he should've let us known since we would've surely found the time to see him... and now, he's gone.

Mourning far away is so hard too.
The only connection I have right now are with our common friends in Facebook.

All we could do is pray.
Pray for him and his daughter and wife he left behind.

He will surely be missed by his patients as well.
But for us, we will miss the laughter and togetherness we could've still had with him.

May you rest in peace dear friend... We love you.

Easy Valentine Doily Crafts

Hello Friends!

I hope that whatever team your rooting for this SUPERBOWL wins!
We are watching of course, but the highlight of our weekend was my son Aidan's
PETER PAN MUSICAL!

AIDAN is the little indian wearing dark brown to the right
It was truly very fun and exciting!
Honestly, even if my son did not participate in the show, I would still say that the show
over-all was PAN-tastic!!

Oldest kid in the group is Peter (Bailee) who is still in High school

But the most important thing is that, my little AIDAN truly enjoyed this experience and had a great time feeling proud of their work and belonging to such a fantastic group of kids!
I'm betting this won't be the last! ;-)

Taking his Bow
Thank you for indulging my "stage mom" side my friends.
And now back to my craft.

I came up with two very simple Valentine craft for this loving holiday.
We will be out of town that day but I still wanted to come up with something special
since it will be Sophia's 1st!

Doily Hearts Table Cover
This is truly a super easy but big bang project!

So my breakfast table has a lazy susan in the middle that added an extra layer to this simple project.

Plain jane most days
I then created a pattern first on top of the lazy susan...
Simple patterns
 ... then Taped away underneath
Our Simple but pretty Valentines table
I then added some bigger doily on the main table. Then taped away.

I also made this simple Doily Garland for the window...

Super simple again and budget0friendly

I got most of my doily from the Dollar Store and Hobby Lobby and still have Lots left-over.
This project cost less than $5 to make!

But of course, I could not keep the setting looking this way everyday.
So I just made a smaller Heart Doily Mat for the center of the table for daily use until Valentines day comes!

How about you, do you decorate for Valentines too? big or small, grand or simple, what matters is the  LOVE your give and receive on this special day right?!

Have  A Wonderful Week!

Welcome to the world Sophia!!!

Hello Friends!

She's finally here to rock our world and melt our hearts day in and day out!

Thank you so much for all your well wishes, prayers and just plain positive thoughts all throughout my pregnancy and beyond! You guys have been so supportive and I can't help but feel that my blogging friends are like 'family' to me too!

Let me tell you a little bit of story about the big birthday.

I was scheduled for C-section at 7:30 am at a hospital 40 minutes away from our home. So my hubs and I had to get up early, like 4 am, since we needed to be there by 5 am for prep and all. I woke up at 2 am, and could not go back to sleep anymore - excitement, anxiousness, whatever it was, it kept me up, until it was time to go.

Selfie before being wheeled in
Everything was routine and I was wheeled in into the Operating room around 7:15am. We were all happy, including my OB, that we could all start earlier than planned. And then the 'not-so-lucky' thing happened... you see when they had to put in my Spinal Anesthesia, the nurse anesthetist  was having trouble. She first tried 3x and failed... She was so sorry and could not understand why she couldn't get into the right spot. I was very patient too because I knew this was no easy procedure and I did have a history of being a difficult back stick (with my 2nd one, a resident tried 4x and failed before the attending got it), I just kept on praying they get it because we might have to postpone or do  another form of anesthesia which I was not ready for.

The Anesthesiologist was called in, and he was apparently the 'sharp shooter' of the entire hospital. We thought he got it the first try but after 11 minutes of waiting for the anesthesia to kick in, we knew it was another failed attempt since I was still feeling everything! So he came back tried 2 more times before he finally got it! That made a total of 7 pokes on my back+ more for the local anesthesia they put in!!!

Anyhow, my OB got Sophia out at 8:29 am and hearing her beautiful and strong cry just made me cry myself! I was just so happy. My hubs left my side to see her and take those precious first moments and by the time I saw her I was sobbing with joy - perfect. Our pediatrician, who is actually a close friend of ours,  congratulated us and gave us the thumbs up. God is great.

So now we are 1 week into her life and still learning from each others new and old routines. She is a good baby and although my breast milk is not enough yet to fully satisfy her, I know it will come in time. But for now, I'm wallowing in sheer bliss knowing she is finally here - fine and healthy, and that for sure life can only get better from here!

Being A Doctor first

Hello Friends!

This week has been crazy busy again for me. I have been busy preparing for a talk for this summit...

And at the same time getting my 'other house' in order... That is my CLINIC.

I don't want to leave my patients hanging in the air when I go on Maternity leave soon, so my schedule has been booked to the teeth. :-)

Anyway, like I've said before, PEDIATRICS is my FIRST LOVE and will always be the career for me, so for you all my decorating-loving friends, although you know I am also passionate about decorating and my home in general, I thought I'd share this super short video of ME on how I feel about my first love...

Hope you all have a wonderful day my friends and wish me luck!

I've been tagged!

I've been tagged but my good blogger friend Shelley from Calypso in the Country. SO here it goes...

1.  Are you named after someone?
I wish, I was named after a street. Actually my full name is Maria Claravel. Maria Clara is one of the most famous female literary character in a Philippine novel called "Noli Me Tangere"  and initially I thought I was named after her. But when I asked my mom, she nonchalantly said  "No, I named you after a street I saw, just around the corner from our first apartment"! Hah!

2.  When was the last time you cried?
3 weeks or so ago, I got upset with a petty argument about the baby's name! LOL! My hubs was having 2nd thoughts about the name "Sophia" since he found out it was the most popular name in 2011 and 2013,  but I didn't care and I cried!!! Petty, petty, must be the hormones!;-)

3.  Do you have kiddos?
Yup, 2 boys and a little girl on the way - the center of my universe.

4.  If you were another person, would you be a friend of yourself?
YES definitely! We would have so much fun shopping together!!!!

via

5.  Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Have a weakness for anything chocolate - I have them everywhere from home to work. I also collect dolls - not the collectible and expensive one, Disney dolls!

I have more than these...

6.  Do you like handwriting?
Nope. My hand-writing is horrible!!!!!
But I still write my "thank-you notes" & Christmas cards whenever I can!

7.  What is your favorite cereal?
Nestle's Koko Krunch - it's from the Philippines, my mom sends me a boxful from there! Super yummy, haven't found a substitute for it here yet!
yum

8.  What's the first thing you notice about people?
Their feet. Yup, I have a foot fetish sort of... weird, but true. ;-)

via
9.  What's the color of your eyes?
Brown black.

10.  Scary movie or happy endings?
Never liked watching scary movies, so definitely I'm a happy-endings-kinda-gal!

11.  Favorite TV shows?
I binge watch my shows - Sherlock, Downton Abbey, House of Cards.

via
12.  Summer or Winter?
Summer baby yeah! I would live by the beach someday. :-)

13.  Hugs or kisses?
Both. Love giving hugs and receiving kisses more.

14.  Do you have a special talent?
I can sing Videoke like no one can... well sorta!

one of those moments

15.  Where were you born?
Manila, Philippines

16.  What are your hobbies?
Collecting, decorating, shopping, reading blogs, watching movies, trying new recipes.

17.  Do you have any pets?
Does our pet Beta count?

18.  Favorite movie?
Sooo many - but to name a few : Sleepless in Seattle, While you were sleeping, The Devil wears Prada, Shawshank Redemption, Toy Story, LOTR series.

via
19.  What color is your car?
Silver.  I drive a momma van a.k.a. mini van.

20.  What do you want to be when you grow up?
I'm lucky to be doing what I love now - a kiddiedoc and would probably do it the rest of my life (yup no retiring, just slowing down). And oh yeah, Travel, travel, travel, like there's no tomorrow!
