Custom Walk-in Closet Options

Now that you know my INSPIRATIONS, let's see how we can execute this dream shall we?

1) California Closets

Just a quick Disclaimer, I did not consult with California Closet for my project. I am only writing based on reviews and opinions of others online, who have done their closets with them.

PROS: Excellent customization, Dream it and they can do it, Great quality, endless options

CONS: Dreaming it and doing it for a price, a steep one at that (expected really) $$$$$, not available in a lot of areas unless your willing to do the consults over the phone and via internet rather than talking with an actual person

2) Home Depot

I am currently consulting with their Design consultant on this project since I saw a good sale on their site. They have 3 lines of closet cabinetry that does custom closets.  And they can design using their all their kitchen cabinetry manufacturers too (Kraftmaid, Thomasville. etc.)!

Home Decorator
Martha Stewart

Closet Maid
PROS: lots of options from different manufacturers, convenience (since there's a Home Depot everywhere); SALES come in rotation so you can wait for the right sale for the type of cabinetry you want; for the closet cabinetry, most of them are already assembled for easy installation

CONS: $$$$ -$$ depending on the type of cabinets and finish, each store has different Design consultant so working with one may work for some or others but maybe not for you

3) IKEA Pax System

Kris from Driven by Decor wrote the Good, the Bad and the Ugly about this system already so you may want to check on that HERE.

IKEA
PROS: Easy access and use to their online planner, love that you could customize the organization accessories easily, Best price - $

CONS: Customization can be limited depending on what you want, limited access if you don't have IKEA nearby,

I'm currently toying with their online planner, so we'll see...

There is also the ELFA system and TCS closet from THE CONTAINER STORE, but I did not delve into these systems because one, I did not like the ELFA for my closet, and TWO, I don't have any Container Store near me! ;-)

Anything I missed here? Have you done a similar project in the past? Experiences with any of these retailers? Do share, I would love to know more about this process!

Have a Great Weekend Folks!

  1. I'll have to read Kris's post on the IKEA system. All of the others would likely be out of my budget. I do love the idea of a custom style closet but have a hard time justifying the cost since we do fine with the builder system we already have. Now, in our other house we absolutely needed one but didn't because we knew it wasn't a forever home. I know you'll pick a winner system--don't forget the purse display!!! ;)

  2. Ooh I like the Calabria Beach with the large wide handles and the soft close drawer. Sounds and looks very nice! Keeping the color light will help keep the room feeling spacious too- I do believe. Since your home is a bit contemporary I'd go that direction- If I was asked for my opinion!! LOL... I give it anyway! :-)

  4. We live in NC and looked into California Closets for our master walk in closet and agree...it was expensive. We considered Lowe's and HD options but too tricky and wasn't sure about how it would hold up over time, so we called around to several other custom closet companies in our area and though I can't remember who we used...it turned out great! Reasonably priced and they customize everything to your needs and the size of your area. If I come across who we used and they are in other areas too, I will pass it on to you.
    Good luck!
    Blessings,
    Cindy

  6. Such a huge project! We put ELFA in our closet and love it. It's pretty straight-forward - you can even design it online and call and have them help. But definitely wait for a sale!
Can't wait to see what you do!
